Making Inferences – Week 9

How do we make an inference?  You make an inference when you use clues from the story to figure out something that the author doesn’t tell you.  When you make an inference, be able to identify the clues that you used. Lets practise!

Watch the following film clips to help you become familiar with how to make an inference and what inferences are!

 

 

 

 

 

Make a brief comment about the inferences you made while watching “Bigger than Alexander”. Record your responses in your post.

 

Now it is your turn to have a go at making inferences! Read “Special Night” and “Something Special” and answer the questions. Make sure you type the name of the story and answer the questions in full sentences.

 

Story 1 – Special Night

Katie was excited about tonight. Happily, she put on her big, red shoes and bright, yellow outfit. Her mom helped Katie paint her face white with a big, red circle on each cheek. Just before Katie ran out the door to meet her friends, she attached her large, squeaky nose and placed a bright blue, pointy hat on top of her head. She grabbed an empty bag and went out into the night.

2. What do you think Katie was dressed as?

3. What words helped you know?

Story 2 – Something Special

Jalisa woke up early and ran down the stairs with a huge smile on her face. She had been waiting all night for Saturday to arrive. She ran into the kitchen. On the table was a large pile of hot, steaming flapjacks with a candle in them. Dante, Jalisa’s brother, walked in holding a large box wrapped in pretty pink paper and tied with a shiny, purple bow. Jalisa beamed and quickly tore off the paper to reveal a box with a beautiful doll on the side. She hugged and kissed her brother and ran to call her best friend. The day was starting off wonderfully.

Questions –

3. Why do you think Jalisa’s brother gave her the gift?

Indigenous Australians – Week 7

As we continue our research on European settlement, we turn our attention to the Indigenous Australians.

Did you know…

The Aboriginal Flag was designed by Mr Harold Thomas, an elder of the Aranda Community in Central Australia. It was first flown in 1972. The top section of the flag is black and represents the Aboriginal people. The symbol of the sun is in the centre and represents the giver of life. The red at the bottom symbolises the earth.

Task: Choose 4 questions and answer them in full sentences. You may need to do a bit of research!

  • Name a famous Aboriginal person. What are they famous for?
  • What are three reasons why the Aborigines got sick or died when the white Europeans came to Australia?
  • What does it mean to be Aboriginal?
  • How do Aborigines pass on information to one another?
  • What are some pieces of information you know about hunting and gathering?
  • Name some things that could be hunted and some things that could be gathered.
  • What information do you know about Aboriginal shelter?

Family History – Week 6

It is important that we know our own family history and where our family  came from. Interview one of your family members to find out more.

First Sacrament of Initiation – Baptism (Week 5)

We have been learning about the three Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.  It is important for you to know about your special day where you became a member of God’s family.

3)        Do I have God Parents? Who are they?
4)        What did I wear when I was Baptised?
5)        Was my outfit specially chosen for me? Was it passed down?

7)        Did my God Parents or parents receive a special candle or certificate from the church?
8)        Do your parents remember seeing any of the symbols used in Baptism? What were they?

Community (Week 2)

A community a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.

A ritual is a set of actions, performed mainly for their symbolic value. It may be prescribed by the traditions  of a community, including a religious community.

A tradition  is a belief or behaviour passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past.
